From Summer Help to Orthopedic Surgeon

Congratulations Dr. Hester on your 5-year anniversary with OrthoSouth! Dr. W "Trey" Hester III's journey with OrthoSouth is a remarkable full-circle story that began long before he became a doctor. It was the summer of 2001 when a young Trey Hester first walked through the doors of OrthoMemphis (now OrthoSouth) for a summer job with Dr. Timothy Krahn. When he returned to OrthoSouth in 2007, he spent three years as a medical assistant for Dr. Kenneth Weiss. Both Dr. Weiss and Dr. Krahn had a profound impact on his life, helping to shape his early career in medicine. He also credits Dr. Michael Neel as a key mentor during this formative time.

The Journey from Medical Assistant to Orthopedic Surgeon

Today, Dr. Hester is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle surgery. His unique perspective, gained from years on the front lines as a medical assistant, influences his work every day. He now stands as one of the practice's highly respected specialists, a testament to his dedication and the compelling journey that led him here.

Early Roots at OrthoSouth

Dr. Hester's connection to OrthoSouth began during his formative years, when he worked with the practice as a medical assistant prior to attending medical school. Whether assisting with clinical tasks, shadowing physicians, or immersing himself in the day-to-day operations of a busy orthopedic clinic, these early experiences laid the foundation for his passion in musculoskeletal medicine. His time at OrthoSouth not only gave him firsthand exposure to patient care but also instilled in him a deep respect for the collaborative nature of orthopedic treatment.

Medical Training and Specialization

After earning his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine in 2014, Dr. Hester pursued rigorous training in orthopedic surgery, eventually completing a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery. His specialization reflects a commitment to helping patients regain mobility and quality of life, whether they're athletes recovering from injury or individuals dealing with chronic conditions.

Return to OrthoSouth as a Surgeon

Returning to OrthoSouth as a fully credentialed surgeon was a homecoming of sorts. Practicing at the Arlington and Briarcrest locations in Tennessee, as well as the Southaven and Hernando locations in Mississippi, Dr. Hester offers a unique combination of clinical expertise and familiarity with the organization. His approach is patient-centered, focusing on both minor and complex conditions of the lower extremities. Known for his compassionate care and surgical precision, Dr. Hester has earned high praise from both patients and colleagues. He has also received national recognition for being named a Castle Connolly 2025 Top Doctor.

Beyond the Clinic

Outside of medicine, Dr. Hester enjoys life in East Memphis with his wife Jenna and their three children. He enjoys grilling and spending time with his family along with an occasional fishing excursion.
