Dr. Peter Lindy is an orthopaedic surgeon at OrthoSouth with over 30 years of experience practicing in Memphis. He specializes in joint preservation and replacement, with particular expertise in Birmingham hip resurfacing, MAKO robotic joint replacement, and custom 3D-designed knee replacement - advanced techniques that allow him to tailor the surgical approach to each patient's individual anatomy and goals rather than using a one-size-fits-all implant.

A fourth-generation Memphian and White Station High School graduate, Dr. Lindy earned his undergraduate degree summa laude from Yale University before completing his medical degree at Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Brown University / Rhode Island Hospital. His clinical focus includes arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder, hip and knee replacement, and joint-preserving procedures for patients who are not yet ready - or not yet appropriate candidates - for full joint replacement.

Dr. Lindy currently sees patients at OrthoSouth's Primacy and Germantown locations and operates at St. Francis, Methodist, and Baptist hospitals. He is a member of the American Medical Association, Memphis Orthopaedic Society, and Tennessee Orthopaedic Society. Outside the clinic, he enjoys pickleball, snow skiing, and time with his wife and four children.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Birmingham hip resurfacing and how is it different from total hip replacement?

Birmingham hip resurfacing is a joint-preserving alternative to total hip replacement for appropriate candidates. Rather than removing the femoral head entirely, the surgeon reshapes it and caps it with a metal implant that fits into a matching metal socket. This preserves more of the patient's own bone, which can make future revision surgery easier if ever needed. Hip resurfacing is typically best suited for younger, more active patients with good bone quality. Dr. Lindy will evaluate your imaging, age, and activity level to determine whether resurfacing or total hip replacement is the right approach for you.

What is a custom 3D-designed knee replacement?

Custom 3D-designed knee replacement uses pre-surgical imaging to create an implant and surgical cutting guides precisely sized and shaped to match your individual knee anatomy, rather than selecting from standard off-the-shelf implant sizes. The goal is a more natural fit and feel after surgery. Not every patient needs a custom implant - Dr. Lindy will determine during your evaluation whether a custom or standard approach is the better fit for your knee.

What is MAKO robotic joint replacement?

MAKO is a robotic-arm assisted surgical system used for hip and knee replacement. Before surgery, a CT scan creates a 3D model of your joint. During the procedure, the MAKO system provides real-time guidance and keeps the robotic arm within pre-planned boundaries to optimize implant placement. The goal is greater precision than manual techniques, which can improve alignment and potentially extend how long the implant lasts.

What is joint preservation surgery and who is it for?

Joint preservation surgery includes procedures designed to repair or protect a damaged joint and delay or avoid the need for full replacement. This may include hip resurfacing, arthroscopic procedures to address cartilage damage or impingement, or other interventions depending on the joint and the extent of damage. Candidates are typically younger or more active patients whose joint damage does not yet warrant replacement. Dr. Lindy evaluates each patient's imaging, symptoms, and activity goals to determine whether a joint-preserving approach is realistic and appropriate.

How do I know if I need joint replacement or a less invasive procedure?

With over 30 years of orthopaedic experience in Memphis, Dr. Lindy evaluates each patient individually. The right answer depends on the degree of joint damage, your age and activity level, what prior treatments you have tried, and your overall health. Many patients benefit from arthroscopic or joint-preserving procedures before replacement becomes necessary. Dr. Lindy will review your imaging and walk through all available options at your first appointment.
